Wet Macular Degeneration Treatment

If you have wet macular degeneration, treatment is available, though it is typically more involved than the kind for the dry form of this condition. This is because the wet type is usually considered more severe, which often means that surgery and other drastic measures are necessary. Consider the types of wet macular degeneration treatment available.

Drug Injections

If you hope to slow the progression of vision loss from this condition, and perhaps even make your vision slightly better, you should look into injections of certain medications into the eyes. There is a drug on the market that can prevent the growth of new abnormal blood vessels, and since excess growth of such vessels is the cause of this condition, you should get some relief from it. The downside is that you will need frequent injections to see any results from this kind of wet macular degeneration treatment.

Another type of injection is referred to as photodynamic therapy. Instead of injecting drugs into your eye, this procedure involves injecting a medication into your arm, which will eventually go to your eyes. The drug will travel until it reaches the blood vessels, and since this medication is light-activated, it will destroy the vessels after your doctor shines a small light into your eyes. This procedure will likely need to be repeated to see results, which are temporary anyway. Additionally, this wet macular degeneration treatment cannot improve your vision or even stop its loss, though it does slow it down.

Surgery

Blood vessels that leak fluids like blood and protein into the surrounding eye can be damaged and eventually reduced through laser surgery. This wet macular degeneration treatment uses a beam of light to get rid of these vessels, but the disadvantage is that healthy tissue may also be destroyed in the process, so there is a chance that the vision may be worsened by this procedure. Your doctor should let you know if you are one of the few patients who can benefit from this wet macular degeneration treatment. Not very many people qualify for this procedure.
